This Holiday Season, Give Hope to People Affected by Cancer

PRESS RELEASE | The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is encouraging residents to take part in the 10th edition of the Rivière-du-Loup Relay for Life. Bernard Généreux, MP, will serve as the event’s honorary chair. This nighttime walk will take place on the track and field near Stade Premier Tech on June 8, 2019.

“By signing up for the CCS’s Relay for Life, you can support a loved one who has cancer or honour the memory of someone you have lost, because no one should have to face cancer alone. The Relay for Life is a night of hope, and I will be doing everything I can to promote the event, which brings tangible support and comfort to the residents of our region,” said Généreux, the MP for Montmagny–L’Islet–Kamouraska–Rivière-du-Loup.

The Relay for Life is the largest cancer-related fundraising event in Quebec. The event consists of teams of 10 people who participate in a friendly relay race by walking around the track all night long. In Rivière-du-Loup, over 80 cancer survivorscalled “bearers of hope”—accompanied by their caregivers, and over 500 people—families, colleagues and friends—have set themselves the challenge of walking for 12 hours. The event also includes a celebration of life and tributes to those affected by cancer.

To promote this year’s Relay for Life in Rivière-du-Loup, organizers are calling on people to ask themselves the question “Who are you walking for?” This evocative slogan reminds us that half of all Canadians will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. Last year, over 53,000 Quebeckers learned that they had cancer.

Since the first Rivière-du-Loup Relay for Life in 2010, over $670,000 has been raised. These funds have directly benefitted the community in various ways, including by:

  • reaching 120,000 women whose lives could be saved by getting a mammogram;
  • funding 36,000 hours of research to develop a cancer vaccine; and
  • enabling 6,000 people with cancer to join a support group.

To learn more about the event, to participate as a walker or a volunteer, or to make a donation, residents of Rivière-du-Loup can visit the website or contact the CCS’s regional office directly at 418-683-8666.
